It is a myth in our culture that a person must be in a relationship to celebrate or enjoy Valentine’s Day. Who started that, anyway? All finger-pointing aside, I think it’s time for a paradigm shift. Romantic love is not the only form of love. Coupled up or not, we at Brighter Dates want to encourage our readers to think beyond cliche images of red roses and assorted chocolates this year. As an alternative, I’ve compiled a list of simple and inclusive ways for Cincinnatians to celebrate Valentine’s Day through gratitude, compassion, and giving.
- Send a digital valentine to a child at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
- Adopt a new friend at Animal Friends Humane Society’s “My Furry Valentine” on February 15 in West Chester.
- Donate a haircut via the “Care Through Hair” program at Thrive Salon in Montgomery. Contact owner Erika LaDawn for details.
- Send flowers to a relative or friend who is going through a tough time. There are lots of deals right now!
- Leave anonymous, affirming notes in unexpected places-- grocery carts, library books, you name it! A NKY blogger found this one in a parking lot-- scroll to #7 and get inspired.
- Bake cookies for a neighbor. We highly recommend Bake Me Home's mixes and pre-made dough.
- Make a Valentine’s Day gift basket for your parents. Check Pinterest for themed ideas like this and this.
- Send a love note (emails work, too!) to a family member or dear friend. Share your gratitude or include a special memory.
- Celebrate International Book Giving Day by donating books to Adopt a Book.
- Register for Give Back Cincinnati’s free “Young at Heart” event on February 15 at St. Paul Village. We'll be there!
- Show appreciation for co-workers with these printable wraps for chocolate bars. Feeling less than crafty? A fresh and unexpected box of Holtman's Donuts will generate priceless reactions-- especially the maple bacon!
